OUR HISTORY

Founded in 1963 by Dr. Jean Kelty and Perc Kelty in their garage, Animal Charity of Ohio, Inc. began with a
simple but powerful mission: to rescue abused, abandoned, and neglected animals in Mahoning County.
What started as a grassroots effort by two dedicated individuals has grown into a leading organization
that continues to serve the community with the same passion and commitment.

Over the decades, Animal Charity of Ohio has expanded into a full-service facility. In recent years,
especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for our services has increased dramatically. It
became clear that operating from two smaller facilities was no longer enough to meet the demands of
the community.

This realization ushered in a new chapter for Animal Charity of Ohio, an expansion to our current location
to better serve the growing number of animals in need. Today, after 60+ years of dedicated service, we
remain committed to this mission for generations to come.

OUR MISSION

At Animal Charity of Ohio, we have an important mission to expand humane investigations of abused,
neglected, and abandoned companion animals. As the only Humane Society in Mahoning County,
Animal Charity of Ohio has a distinct and essential mission in not only fighting for animals affected by
abuse and neglect, but also providing pet owners with high quality, affordable medical care. Animal
companionship has been proven to lead to better mental health in owners, decreasing loneliness,
anxiety, and depression. Animal Charity of Ohio believes that pet ownership should be accessible for all
individuals, regardless of socioeconomic status. Our affordable prices help support our humane program
to fight animal cruelty and to educate the public on responsible pet ownership. Furthermore, by providing
access to affordable ownership, we aim to lessen the number of neglect cases in need of response.
